Hiring a Contractor

  • Determine the project you want to have completed prior to contacting a contractor
  • It is best to meet with at least two qualified specialists to compare ideas and price
  • Make it a point to learn as much as possible about each prospective contractor (attitude, experience, perception towards their work and gage responsiveness towards you and your project)
  • Going for the least expensive is not always the best solution. Choose the contractor you feel is best suited for your project and your needs
  • Always ask for a written estimate. Make sure your job is clearly defined in the estimate and there is no confusion on what jobs are going to be done and the timeframe of the project.
  • When seeking out a contractor conduct a background check on the chosen contractor(s)

    • check homeowner references as well as professional references
    • visit previous jobs completed by contractor
    • verify the contractor has insurance
    • verify the contractor has valid licenses when required for a job

  • When you agree to have a contractor do your project, make sure to get a confirmed start date.
